About Arterial

What is Arterial?

Arterial is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that fosters and funds mass media stories and storytelling about art, artists and American creative culture. We underwrite documentaries, series, podcasts, and editorial projects that put artists in front of large audiences, in the places where culture is actually consumed.

Why does this work matter?

Artists shape culture but rarely control how their stories get told — or whether they get told at all. Most arts funding supports the making of art. Arterial funds the telling of it, on the premise that public understanding and public support move together, drive appreciation and demand for cultural products

How is Arterial different from a grantmaking foundation or an arts council?

Traditional arts funders support production, exhibition, and individual practice. Arterial funds media about art, artists and creative culture — the films, shows, and stories that carry their work to audiences far beyond the gallery. We see media, distribution and narrative as its own underfunded layer of the arts ecosystem.

Who runs Arterial?

Arterial was founded by Scott Power and is governed by a volunteer board of directors.

How new is the organization?

Arterial was founded in October 2022 and received 501(c)(3) status in the fall of 2023. Our work builds on over 30 years of exhibition, production, and arts advocacy experience by our founding team who have worked in the creative and visual arts their entire careers.

What We Support

What kinds of projects does Arterial support?

Documentary and unscripted series, podcasts, editorial and digital media, exhibitions with a media component, television programming, movies and publishing. The common thread is reach: projects that bring artists' stories to audiences at scale.

What is fiscal sponsorship, and does Arterial offer it?

Fiscal sponsorship lets a project operate under an established nonprofit's tax-exempt status, so it can receive grants and tax-deductible donations without forming its own 501(c)(3). Arterial fiscally sponsors a small number of aligned projects, including NOT REAL ART, Man One Academy and Classic Black.

We also provide fiscal sponsorship to visual and performing artists, arts organizations and related programs that require fundraising support but do not have non-profit status. Projects and programs we sponsor must be arts-centric, informative, educational and/or entertaining to a general public. Artists and projects we have supported with fiscal sponsorship include Art House.

What is Arterial's relationship to NOT REAL ART?

NOT REAL ART is a fiscally sponsored project of Arterial. Produced and owned by Crewest Studio, NOT REAL ART comprises a podcast, blog and events in the service of helping today’s working artists tell their stories and promote their work.

What is Arterial's relationship to Artsville USA?

Artsville USA is an Arterial program celebrating American contemporary arts and crafts from Western North Carolina. Artsville USA was gifted to Arterial  in 2024 by its founder, artist and business woman Louise Glickman, based in Asheville, North Carolina. Elise Wilson is currently the executive director of Artsville USA.

What is Arterial's relationship to Crewest Studio?

Arterial was founded by Scott Power, the President and Chief Creative Officer of Crewest Studio. Arterial is also the fiscal sponsor of two mission aligned Crewest Studio productions, NOT REAL ART and Art House.

Can I apply for funding or sponsorship?

We provide support throughout the year. If you're an artist or non-profit arts organization with an important story or related program that requires a project grant, capacity grant or fiscal sponsorship, email us today: grants@arterial.org.

What don't you fund?

We provide project grants and capacity building grants to artists and arts organizations who have stories they want to tell about their work in the visual arts, performing arts and creative culture.

Our project grants are given for development, production and distribution of arts related programs, stories and formats such as documentaries, digital video series, podcasts and events.

Our capacity grants can be applied to story telling related activities such as marketing, promotion, publicity and distribution. Grants given range from $500 to $25,000, or more, depending on the nature of the project.

The nature of the stories we support are informative, educational and entertaining to a general public. Stories and organizations our grants have supported include: The Underbelly Project and Artbound by SoCal PBS.
